Buthawa Beach is a coastal stretch situated within the broader Yala region, a short distance from the southern town of Tissamaharama. As with much of this coastline, the beach offers a relatively undeveloped setting where visitors can walk along the shore, observe seabirds and, depending on the season, watch sea turtles that nest along Sri Lanka's southern coast. The area's proximity to Yala National Park means wildlife is a persistent presence, and the atmosphere tends towards the quiet and natural rather than the busy resort experience found further west. Most visitors combine a beach visit here with safari activities at the national park, treating Tissamaharama as their base for exploring both inland and coastal environments.
