Wilpattu National Park is one of Sri Lanka's most significant protected wilderness areas, situated in the north-west of the island. The park encompasses dense scrub jungle, open grasslands and a distinctive landscape dotted with natural lakes known locally as villus, which attract a remarkable variety of wildlife. Visitors come primarily for wildlife safaris, typically undertaken in jeeps with licensed guides, hoping to spot leopards, elephants, sloth bears, deer and a rich diversity of birdlife. The experience tends to feel quieter and less crowded than some of Sri Lanka's better-known parks, lending it a genuinely wild character. Nearby towns serve as practical bases, offering accommodation and safari arrangements. Early morning and late afternoon drives generally offer the best opportunities for animal sightings.
