Yala National Park's Block 1 is the most visited section of Sri Lanka's famous wildlife reserve, situated a short drive from the southern town of Tissamaharama. Visitors come primarily for game drives conducted in open-topped jeeps, scanning the varied landscape of scrub jungle, lagoons and rocky outcrops for wildlife. The park is particularly well regarded for leopard sightings, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and a rich diversity of birdlife. Entrance and jeep hire are arranged through operators in Tissamaharama, which serves as the main base for accommodation and logistics. Morning and afternoon drives offer different conditions and species activity. The terrain shifts noticeably with the seasons, and dry periods tend to concentrate animals around remaining water sources, making wildlife observation more reliable.
