Yatala Vehera is an ancient Buddhist temple situated close to Tissamaharama in Sri Lanka's south-eastern corner, within reach of the wildlife reserves that draw visitors to this part of the island. Like many sacred sites in the region, it forms part of a landscape deeply connected to early Sri Lankan history and the spread of Buddhism across the island. Visitors come to observe the stupa and surrounding religious structures, and the site remains active for local worshippers as well as travellers passing between Tissamaharama and Yala. Removing footwear before entering the grounds is customary, and a respectful, unhurried approach suits the atmosphere of the place.
