Horton Plains National Park lies within Sri Lanka's central Hill Country, not far from the town of Nuwara Eliya. Designated as a protected area, it preserves a stretch of montane grassland and cloud forest at considerable elevation, giving it a distinctly cool, often misty character quite unlike the lowland parks elsewhere on the island. Visitors come to walk marked trails through open plains and dense woodland, watching for wildlife along the way. Birdwatchers find the park particularly rewarding, as the highland habitat supports species rarely encountered at lower altitudes. The landscape is dramatic in its own quiet way, with sweeping views, rocky outcrops and patches of dense vegetation. Those travelling from Nuwara Eliya typically make an early morning start, as mist and cloud tend to thicken as the day progresses.
