Nilaveli Beach lies along Sri Lanka's east coast, a short distance north of Trincomalee. Like much of this coastline, it draws visitors seeking calm, relatively uncrowded shores compared to the busier beaches of the south and west. The sea here is generally clear and calm during the dry season, making it popular for swimming, snorkelling and simply relaxing on the sand.
