About Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island National Park lies off the eastern coast near Trincomalee, encompassing small islands and the surrounding waters. As a protected marine area, it draws visitors primarily for snorkelling and diving, with coral reefs supporting a variety of marine life visible in the relatively clear coastal waters. Day trips from Trincomalee are the standard arrangement, with boats ferrying visitors across for a few hours on and around the islands. The terrestrial portions are modest in scale, and time ashore tends to be limited. Being a national park, entry formalities and fees apply, and certain activities are regulated to protect the environment. The site is best visited during the calmer sea conditions that the east coast experiences seasonally, when visibility underwater is generally at its most favourable.
