Perched on slender wooden poles driven into the shallow coastal waters, the stilt fishermen of the south coast have become one of Sri Lanka's most recognisable sights. Visitors come to watch local fishermen balance on their precarious crossbars, casting lines into the sea in a tradition passed down through generations. The best viewing opportunities are typically in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is favourable and activity tends to be at its most photogenic. Weligama serves as a convenient base for reaching the shoreline where these fishermen operate. Bear in mind that photography requests may come with an expected fee, and the experience has become partly shaped by tourism, so managing expectations beforehand makes for a more straightforward visit.
