About Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park is a protected wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka's southern interior, drawing visitors who come primarily to observe the country's native fauna in a relatively undisturbed natural setting. The park is particularly associated with elephant sightings, and jeep safaris are the standard way to explore its open grasslands, scrub forest, and reservoir margins. Dawn and dusk drives tend to offer the best opportunities for wildlife activity. Although Haputale in the Hill Country serves as a nearby base for travellers exploring the region, the park has its own access infrastructure, and most visitors arrange accommodation and vehicle hire close to the park entrance. It offers a markedly different landscape from the surrounding tea-growing highlands, making it a natural complement to any journey through Sri Lanka's interior.
