Uppuveli is a stretch of sandy beach located a short distance north of Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's east coast. Like much of this coastline, it tends to attract visitors seeking a quieter alternative to the more developed beaches found elsewhere on the island. The calm waters during the appropriate season make it suitable for swimming, and the beach is also known as a base for snorkelling and diving excursions in the surrounding waters. A modest collection of guesthouses and small restaurants has grown up to serve travellers, giving it a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. Most visitors use Trincomalee as a practical hub for onward transport, shopping and services, returning to Uppuveli for its relatively undisturbed shoreline and straightforward seaside pace.
