Ekho Surf Bentota: Lessons, Boards & Wave Conditions

Ekho Surf Bentota: What You Get

Ekho Surf operates the main teaching setup in Bentota, a beach 65km south of Colombo. They offer group and private lessons, board rental, and some accommodation packages. The operation runs year-round but is most active during the June–September swell season. Facilities are basic—no heated pools or changing rooms—but the focus is on water time and fundamentals.

How Much Do Lessons Cost?

Group lessons run 3,500–4,500 LKR (roughly £9–12 USD) per session, usually 1.5–2 hours. Classes typically include 4–8 students. You'll share instructor attention, so progression is slower than one-on-one coaching. Private lessons cost 8,000–12,000 LKR (£21–32 USD) per hour, one instructor to you. Most visitors choose group lessons for value; private sessions suit those with prior experience or tight timelines.

Board rental is 1,500–2,500 LKR (£4–7 USD) daily if you don't bring your own. Wetsuits are optional most months; water temperature sits 26–28°C year-round. No lunch or transport is usually included; bring water and snacks.

When Are the Waves Best?

June to September is the main swell window. Consistent 1–2m waves arrive on most days; occasionally you'll see 3m+ peaks. August and September hold the best conditions. Lessons in June can be patchy—some days produce knee-high ripples. October and May are hit-or-miss; November to March is generally flat.

Check Magic Seaweed or Surfline 2–3 days before booking to confirm swell height and direction. A 2m forecast usually means waist-high to chest-high waves for learners—ideal conditions.

Group vs. Private Lessons: What Suits You?

Group lessons work for absolute beginners aged 10–50. You'll learn to pop up, paddle, and basic balance. Instructors are experienced with nervous swimmers. Best if you're on a budget or want to meet other travellers. Downside: you spend half the session waiting your turn.

Private lessons suit you if you've surfed before, want faster progression, or fear large group settings. One-to-one means constant feedback. Worth it if you plan 3+ sessions. Two-person lessons (sometimes available at group rates) are a good middle ground.

What's the Reality on the Ground?

Ekho Surf is reliable but not fancy. Expect simple wooden huts, sandy changing areas, and basic English from some staff. Booking in advance isn't essential during off-season, but book 1–2 days ahead in July–August. They may ask you to sign a waiver; have your passport available.

Water conditions are warm and generally safe. Rip currents occur occasionally; instructors know them and will avoid taking you out in dangerous sections. Petty theft is rare but lock valuables in your hotel.

How to Get There and When to Go

Bentota is a 90-minute drive south from Colombo airport. Hire a tuk-tuk (2,500–3,500 LKR), share a taxi, or use Uber (around 2,000 LKR). The nearest town centre is 1km away; most guesthouses are within walking distance of the beach.

Stay at least 3 nights if you're a beginner. One session teaches pop-up technique; two or three sessions show whether you'll enjoy the sport. A week gives you 4–5 lessons and time to practise in the shallows alone.

Peak season (July–September) means busier lineups and warmer water. Shoulder months (June, October) offer smaller crowds and enough swell. November–April is dry season for the west coast but flat for surfing.

FAQ

Do I need prior experience to take a lesson at Ekho Surf Bentota?

No. Group lessons are designed for complete beginners. Tell the instructor if you're nervous in water; they'll adjust pace and depth. Private lessons can also be tailored if you've surfed elsewhere.

What's included in the lesson cost?

Usually a board, basic instruction, and 1.5–2 hours in the water. Wetsuit, lunch, photos, and transport are almost always extra or not provided. Bring your own water bottle and snacks.

Is August or September better for lessons?

September typically has more consistent swells and slightly fewer beginners than August. Both are good. July–August are hotter and more humid; September stays warm but wind patterns often favour better wave shape.

Can I rent a board without a lesson?

Yes. You can hire a board for 1,500–2,500 LKR daily and surf independently if you have experience. Ekho Surf may require proof of competence (a video or past lesson cert) for anything larger than a soft 7-footer.
