The short answer
The Kandy to Ella train takes 6–7 hours and costs between LKR 400 and LKR 800 depending on class. Book a reserved seat at least two weeks ahead — preferably a month ahead in high season. Sit on the right side of the carriage (left side on the return). This is one of the most in-demand tourist train routes in Asia, so planning matters.
Which train should you take?
Two trains run this route daily. The most popular is the 1005 Podi Menike, departing Kandy at roughly 10:05 and arriving Ella around 17:00–17:30. The 0830 Udarata Menike is a slightly earlier option departing around 08:30, arriving by 15:00–15:30.
Both are intercity express services operated by Sri Lanka Railways. Journey times vary by 20–40 minutes depending on delays, which are common. Build buffer time if you have onward transport from Ella.
What are the ticket classes and prices?
Three classes exist on this route. Here is a direct comparison:

1st Class observation carriages are air-conditioned and have large panoramic windows. Seats face forward or across the aisle. Good visibility but the glass can reduce the open-air feel many travellers prefer. Limited seats — usually one or two carriages per train.
2nd Class reserved is the sweet spot for most travellers. Cushioned seats, open windows, reasonable comfort for a six-hour journey. This is the most popular choice. Book early.
3rd Class unreserved is cheap but you may stand for hours, particularly between Kandy and Nanu Oya. Not recommended for the full journey unless you board at Kandy early and grab a seat.

Which side of the train should you sit on?
This is the question everyone asks. The answer is specific.
Travelling Kandy → Ella: sit on the RIGHT side. Window seats on the right give you the best views of valleys, tea estates, and the famous Nine Arches Bridge approach near Demodara. The left side is not worthless — you get mountain and forest views — but the signature drops and estate vistas open up on the right.

For 2nd Class, window seats are marked. Request a window seat on the right when booking. On Sri Lanka Railways' official online system, seat maps are shown at booking — pick accordingly.
Note: the Nine Arches Bridge is at Demodara station, roughly 2km before Ella. The train passes over the bridge, not underneath it. You will see the surrounding valley and the drop below. Sit on the right side in seats nearest the window for the best angle.
How do you buy tickets?
Option 1 — Sri Lanka Railways website (www.railway.gov.lk). Official online booking opens 30 days before travel. The site is functional but slow. Pay by international card. Print or screenshot your e-ticket. This is the most reliable method for reserved seats.
Option 2 — Third-party booking agents. Sites like Bookaway or 12Go Asia list this route. They add a service fee of roughly USD 2–5 but have a cleaner interface and better customer support if something goes wrong. Worth the fee for peace of mind.
Option 3 — At Kandy station in person. There is a dedicated tourist ticket window. Queues can be long. For same-day or next-day travel in high season (December–March, July–August), reserved seats are likely sold out. Walking in hoping for a ticket is a gamble.
Book at least two to four weeks ahead in high season. Some travellers report selling out six weeks in advance in December and January.
Key stops along the route
The full route runs Colombo–Badulla, but boarding at Kandy and exiting at Ella covers the most scenic section. Key stops after Kandy:
- Peradeniya Junction — 7 minutes from Kandy, near the botanical gardens
- Hatton — gateway to Adam's Peak; around 2 hours from Kandy
- Nanu Oya — closest station to Nuwara Eliya, around 3 hours from Kandy
- Haputale — 5 hours in; a worthwhile stop if you want a quieter alternative to Ella
- Ella — final stop for most tourists; roughly 6–7 hours total
The scenery intensifies after Hatton. If you are reading or on your phone before then, that is fine. From Hatton onwards, put everything away.
What about the Colombo to Ella train?

Is the journey worth the hype?
Yes, with realistic expectations. The scenery from Hatton to Ella is genuinely world-class: sheer drops, endless tea estate terraces, waterfalls, small tunnels. The train itself is old and not always punctual. Toilets are basic. It can get crowded. None of that changes the fact that this is one of the best overland journeys in South Asia.
Budget travellers do this on 3rd Class for under LKR 450 and report it as a highlight of Sri Lanka. Mid-range travellers book 2nd Class reserved a month out and have a comfortable, memorable ride. Either works.

How far in advance should I book the Kandy to Ella train? Book 2–4 weeks ahead in shoulder season, 4–6 weeks ahead between December and March and in July–August. Reserved 2nd Class seats sell out faster than 1st Class observation carriages because there are more of them and they are cheaper.
Can I bring luggage on the train? Yes. There is overhead storage and space under seats. Large backpacks are manageable but busy carriages make movement difficult. Keep a small daypack accessible for the journey.
