Chilaw in 4 Days: The Complete Itinerary

Four days in Chilaw is a genuine sweet spot. You can visit the Munneswaram temple complex, explore the Anawilundawa Ramsar wetlands, walk the Dutch Fort coastline, and take a lagoon boat without feeling like you're ticking boxes. This itinerary suits independent travellers arriving from Colombo β€” roughly 90 km north on the A3.

Is Chilaw Worth Four Full Days?

Honestly, yes β€” if you slow down for it. Chilaw is not a highlight-heavy destination in the way Ella or Sigiriya are. Its value is textural: a functioning fishing town with a significant Hindu and Catholic cultural mix, lagoon scenery that most tourists skip entirely, and access to one of the better birdwatching sanctuaries on the west coast. Travellers who need constant stimulation will struggle by day three. Everyone else will find a comfortable pace.

For context on the broader region, see our North Western Province travel guide.

When Should You Visit Chilaw?

The west coast dry season runs roughly December to March, which gives you calm seas and reliable mornings for birdwatching. April and May are hot and increasingly humid. The southwest monsoon (May–September) brings heavy rain to this coast β€” the lagoons are still accessible but boat trips can be cancelled. October and November are the shoulder months: fewer visitors, occasional afternoon downpours, and surprisingly pleasant mornings.

Day 1: Arrival and the Munneswaram Temple Complex

Morning β€” Get Settled

Arrive by mid-morning. If you're coming from Colombo, the train to Chilaw takes around 2.5 hours; tuk-tuks cover the last stretch to most accommodation. Book your room before arriving β€” Chilaw's guesthouse stock is thin and fills faster than you'd expect during poya weekends.

Recommended options depending on your budget and preference:

Afternoon β€” Munneswaram

Munneswaram is about 6 km from Chilaw town β€” a short tuk-tuk ride. The main Shiva temple is the centrepiece, but the complex includes four other shrines and a church, which reflects the area's layered religious history. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes at the entrance, and bring a small offering if you want to participate. The temple is busiest on Fridays and during festival periods; if you want a quieter visit, go on a weekday afternoon.

Evening

Walk Chilaw town's main market street before it closes. The fish market near the lagoon shore is worth seeing if you're up early, but the afternoon stalls offer dried fish, local produce, and a genuine sense of how the town operates.

Day 2: Anawilundawa Wetlands and Birdwatching

Full Day β€” Start Early

Anawilundawa is approximately 15 km south of Chilaw and is a Ramsar-listed wetland sanctuary. This is the main reason serious birdwatchers include Chilaw on their itinerary. Species recorded here include painted storks, purple herons, jacanas, and various kingfisher species. Bring binoculars and wear muted colours β€” the birds are less disturbed by visitors on foot than by boats, though guided boat trips through the tank system are available.

Start by 6:00 am if possible. Activity drops sharply by 9:30 am in warmer months.

If you want to stay close to the sanctuary, Bird View Resort Anawilundawa is the logical base β€” it's rated 10.0/10 from early reviews and positioned directly for early morning access. Among the Coconut is another option in the area with a more rustic setting.

Afternoon

Rest during the hottest hours (noon–2:30 pm), then take a slow tuk-tuk loop through the surrounding paddy and coconut land. The landscape between Anawilundawa and the coast is genuinely photogenic in the late afternoon light.

Day 3: The Coast, Dutch Fort, and Lagoon Boat

Morning β€” Kalpitiya Road Coastline

The coast north of Chilaw towards Kalpitiya is lined with long, mostly empty beaches. The water is swimmable in the dry season but check local conditions β€” there are no lifeguards and currents can be unpredictable. The drive itself (hire a tuk-tuk for the half-day) is the attraction: coconut palms, lagoon views on one side, ocean on the other.

The remains of the Dutch Fort at Kalpitiya are modest β€” don't expect Galle β€” but the church nearby is well-maintained and historically interesting for anyone tracking the Portuguese and Dutch colonial layer in Sri Lanka.

Afternoon β€” Lagoon Boat Trip

Return to Chilaw and arrange a lagoon boat trip through your accommodation or at the lagoon-side jetty. A standard trip covers the sandbar, mangrove channels, and fishing community islands. Duration is typically 1.5–2 hours. Bring sun protection β€” there's no shade on the water.

Day 4: Slow Morning, Local Food, Departure

Morning

Chilaw's fish market is best visited between 6:00 and 8:00 am. Even if you're not buying, watching the catch come in from the beach-launched outrigger canoes is worth the early start. The town has a small but good selection of kottu and string hopper spots that open by 7:00 am.

Mid-Morning

If time allows before your departure, the Catholic church near the town centre β€” historically significant to the region's fishing community β€” is worth a short visit. The interior is modest but the surrounding neighbourhood gives you a different angle on Chilaw's cultural composition compared to Munneswaram.

Depart by midday to reach Colombo comfortably by afternoon, or continue north towards Kalpitiya if you're extending your trip.

FAQ

Is four days too long for Chilaw? Not if you engage with the wetlands and coast properly. If you're only interested in the temple, one to two days is enough. Four days suits travellers who want birdwatching, lagoon time, and a genuinely unhurried pace.

Can I do Chilaw as a day trip from Colombo? Technically yes β€” Munneswaram and the town are reachable in a long day. But you'll miss the lagoon, birdwatching, and the coast. Staying overnight is strongly recommended.

What's the best transport for getting around? Tuk-tuks are the practical answer for most trips within 15–20 km. For the Anawilundawa visit, arrange a tuk-tuk the evening before and agree on an early pick-up time β€” drivers who know the sanctuary are preferable. There are no reliable bus connections to the wetlands.

Is Chilaw suitable for families with children? Yes, with some planning. The lagoon boat trip is popular with older children. The beaches north of town are better for supervised swimming than the town beach itself. Anawilundawa is engaging for children interested in wildlife but requires early starts and patience.
