Day 1: The Fort, the Market, and the Old Town
Arrive and settle in. Jaffna Fort is the anchor for your first afternoon. The Dutch-built structure dates from 1680. Entry is free. Walk the full ramparts — it takes around 45 minutes. The views over the lagoon are clearest in the late afternoon.
From the fort, it's a 10-minute walk to Jaffna Market. This is the practical heart of the city. Buy snacks, watch the fish section, and pick up a bag of palmyrah products. The market winds down by 6 pm.

Day 3: Temples, the Nallur Festival Route, and Jaffna Peninsula Villages
Start at Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, 2 km northeast of the city centre. This is Jaffna's most important Hindu temple. Non-Hindus can enter the outer areas. Men must remove shirts to enter the inner sanctum. The gopuram (tower) is 25 metres tall and covered in painted sculpture. Arrive before 9 am to avoid the heat and crowds.

Option A (active): Take a boat to Delft Island (also called Neduntivu), the most remote of the Jaffna islands. The trip is around 2 hours each way from Kurikadduwan. Wild ponies, a Dutch fort ruin, a baobab tree, and a coral wall are the main draws. This is a full-day commitment. Go only if you're comfortable with long boat rides.
Option B (cultural): Spend the morning at the Jaffna Public Library — rebuilt after its destruction in 1981 and reopened in 2003. The building itself is architecturally striking. Walk through the Jaffna Archaeological Museum nearby (entry LKR 100). Finish with a slow lunch at one of the restaurants near the Bund Road.
Check out and catch your return transport in the afternoon. The overnight train to Colombo departs Jaffna around 7–8 pm and arrives by morning.
