Before You Arrive: Getting to Ella
The train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya is the standard approach—and rightly so. It's one of Asia's great rail journeys. Book second-class reserved seats in advance (around LKR 400–600). The Kandy–Ella leg takes roughly 6–7 hours. Third class is unreserved and very crowded.
From Colombo by road: around 220 km, 5–6 hours depending on traffic. Tuk-tuks from Ella station to most hotels cost LKR 200–400.

Day 1: Arrive, Settle In, Easy Afternoon Walk
Morning/Afternoon: Arrive and check in
If you're arriving by train, aim for an early afternoon arrival. Check in, have lunch in town, and acclimatise. Ella sits at around 1,000 m elevation. It's noticeably cooler than the coast—pack a layer.
Late afternoon: Little Adam's Peak
Start with the easier hike. Little Adam's Peak is 3 km return from town, mostly well-marked path, takes 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace. No entry fee. Start by 3:30 pm for good light. Views across the Ella Gap are excellent. This is your orientation hike.
Evening: Ella town
Ella's main strip has plenty of cafés and restaurants. Curd and treacle is the local dessert. Budget meals from LKR 600–900 per person.
Day 2: Ella Rock — the Proper Hike
Start time: 6:00 am
Ella Rock is the harder, more rewarding hike. 8 km return. Elevation gain around 300 m. Allow 4–5 hours total. Start early to beat heat and cloud. The trail isn't always well-signed—download an offline map (Maps.me or AllTrails) before you go.
The route follows the railway line south from Ella station, then cuts uphill into forest. No entry fee. Wear proper shoes. Carry 1.5 litres of water minimum.
Views from the top take in Ella Gap and surrounding tea country. On a clear day you can see for 40+ km.
Afternoon: rest or Nine Arch Bridge
You'll be back by midday. If you have energy, the Nine Arch Bridge is 2.5 km from town (walkable or tuk-tuk for LKR 300). Trains pass at various times throughout the day—check the schedule at Ella station. The 9:47 am and 6:38 pm trains are typically the most reliable for photography, but times shift seasonally.
Day 3: Tea Factory Tour + Ravana Falls
Morning: Tea factory
Several tea estates run factory tours near Ella. Uva Halpewatte is one of the more accessible. Tours typically cost LKR 500–800 per person and include a tasting. A tuk-tuk from town runs LKR 600–900 return. Book through your hotel or negotiate directly at the factory gate.
Midday: Ravana Falls
Ravana Falls is 6 km from Ella town on the A23 road toward Wellawaya. Entry fee around LKR 100 (subject to change). Tuk-tuk from town: LKR 600–800 return. The falls are most impressive after rain. Swimming is possible in the lower pool during dry season.
Afternoon: Diyaluma Falls (optional day trip)
If waterfalls are your thing, Diyaluma is 35 km from Ella and Sri Lanka's second highest at 220 m. It's a half-day add-on—hire a tuk-tuk for around LKR 2,500–3,000 return or join a shared tour. Don't attempt this if you haven't recovered from Ella Rock.
Day 4: Train Journey or Slow Morning, Depart
Option A: Early train onward
If you're heading to Kandy or Nuwara Eliya next, the morning train is worth taking. Departure times vary by season—check the Sri Lanka Railways site or ask your hotel. Second-class reserved: book at least 2–3 days ahead during peak season (December–March, July–August).
Option B: Slow final morning
Sleep in. Walk the railway line to Nine Arch Bridge one more time at sunrise (leave by 5:45 am for the best light). Have a proper breakfast. Most hotels will store luggage if your checkout is before your departure.
